History Short: Black Robe Regiment

The "Black Robed Regiment" was the nickname that the British bestowed upon the many patriotic American clergymen during America's Founding Era. It was a back-handed reference to the black robes that they wore.

The British largely blamed the Black Robe Regiment for stirring up troublesome thoughts about American Independence amongst everyday people. The British were not wrong about this! These men played a huge part in the war for Independence, and they represented resistance and courage for Liberty.

One of the most remembered was Peter Muhlenberg, a Virginia minister, who after preaching his sermon, would reveal a military uniform under his black robe, calling his congregation to take up arms for the cause of Liberty. He went on to serve as a General.

There were many of them. They preached of spiritual guidance but also espoused real understanding of political turmoil and the troubles of the time, which justified rebellion against the hand of a tyrannical government.

They were great leaders of proclaiming Liberty, resisting tyranny and opposing any infringement on God-given rights. Their influence in the war for Independence was bold and fearless. Their prayers, patriotic sermons and fierce leadership in their churches were remembered as one of the main reasons our Freedom and Liberty were won.

In the words of John Adam's: "The Pulpits have thundered!"

Preachers once spoke about issues of the day. Maybe they should 'Thunder' again!
