History Short: Civil War Hero

There were many heroes of the Civil War. One of them was Sgt. William Harvey Carney, a flag carrier. He was the first African American to receive the Medal of Honor.

He had been shot in the face, shoulders, legs and his arms, but he 'refused' to let our US flag touch the ground. Showing respect for our flag meant more to him than his life!

It's troubling to read about people of today who disrespect our flag in any way. They must have no idea what it even means or what it represents.
